"Houston, Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle Has Landed." Updated: Monday, July 20, 2009
 | | “That's How It Felt To Walk On The Moon" painted by Alan L. Bean. Astronauts who walked on the moon found it difficult to describe the experience. Apollo 12 lunar module pilot Bean, who also walked on the lunar surface in 1969, took another approach, using his impressive artistic talents to convey what he could not describe. |
"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed," announced confidently Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong as he and companion Lunar Lander pilot Edwin Aldrin, Jr., touched down safely on the moon---forty years ago today. Michael Collins, the third member of the Apollo 11 crew remained in the mother ship, Columbia, preparing for their return as he circled the moon.
The extraordinary accomplishment achieved by Commander Armstrong when he stepped on to the moon's surface was even televised live to earthlings. Talk about “transparency” in government.
There was also another impact made by Apollo 11. The successful voyage, landing and return to earth was a definitive high stakes victory for the US over Cold War adversary and race-to-the-moon competitor, the USSR. NASA would repeat the moon landing journey five more times, ending with Apollo 17.
So many technical marvels and dreams were achieved during the two days the NASA astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin walked around Tranquility Base, the landing site of the Eagle lunar lander, that people everywhere are duty bound to mark this historic triumph of the human race.
Now, on to Mars.
