Personal Injury Attorney’s Notebook: David Grohl
Updated: Thursday, April 07, 2005

David Grohl of the Foo Fighters.

Just when Crowdsafe.com folks think that everyone in the concert industry understands the deadly danger of stage diving (jumping, diving or intentionally falling from a performance stage or elevated area above a crowd), comes what appears to be the latest rock star idiot, if a Los Angeles Times story today is correct.

David Grohl, head of the Foo Fighters and former member of legendary Nirvana leaped from the Wiltern LG concert hall stage last Friday (April 1) in Los Angeles. It is not known if anybody Mr. Grohl fell on was injured or if Wiltern LG management (Clear Channel Entertainment) took action against Mr. Grohl.

Stage diving was deemed so dangerous and deadly in the 1990s that, in a rare act favoring safety, the concert industry took action to stop it. A flood of lawsuits brought by concertgoers held persuade venue operators, artists and promoters to banned the activity.

Over the past number of years, clubs and bands have occasionally allowed the concert activity to return. Mr. Grohl appears to be the latest rock star to promote the deadly stunt. (Hmm, where do concertgoers get those crazy stage diving ideas?)

It was more than ironic that the Grohl incident occurred during a concert by Motorhead. In 1994, England suffered its first known moshing death at a Motorhead concert, according to the Crowdsafe® Database. Lee O'Connor, 21, died from a head injury in a stage diving incident.
