Shots Fired During Nas Concert In London Updated: Monday, March 21, 2005
Gun shots rang out during a concert by rapper Nas (Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones) today. The US performer was playing the famous Brixton Academy (aka Carling Academy Brixton) in London.
The BBC reports that eyewitnesses say a person jumped on stage and fired two shots toward the ceiling. Concertgoers fled for safety. The show did not resume. Fortunately, no one appears to have been injured.
Even though metal detectors and 100 security guards were said to be at the club, according to a Brixton Academy spokesperson, the shooter was able to enter the venue undetected, fire his weapon on stage and escape. The club spokesperson also claimed there was “a high level of security” at the concert.
Had the Brixton spokesperson said the club was understaffed, and without metal detectors, the incident would have been easier to explain.
The shooting marks the third time in about four months that dangerous people at concerts have been able to carry a weapon passed security, climb on stage during a live performance and brandish or discharge their lethal weapon. These incidents---in the US and England---strongly suggest that the concert industries in both countries have yet to address old concert crowd safety and security issues, let alone the challenges of post-9/11. Unfortunately, for the US and UK, this is a very troubling development that has ominous implications.
Police are investigation the shooting.
Brixton Academy is managed by a consortium of top United Kingdom promoters under the name Academy Music Group (AMG). The venue has a capacity just under 5,000 people.
The Brixton shooting comes just two days after a car bombing of a theater in Qatar. At the time of attack the venue was filled with British citizens enjoying a Shakespearean play. One person died and 50 were injured.
